the main reason i started this blog was to write posts about all things i found wonderful. one of my favorite projects that has been on the web for a few years is you are beautiful out of chicago, illinois. it's a small project that has grown out of the shear greatness of a simple idea. the project has been spread all over the world. just three simple words: you are beautiful. plain, simple, positive.
as their statement qualifies...
"You Are Beautiful is a simple, powerful statement
which is incorporated into the over absorption of mass media and
lifestyles that are wrapped in consumer culture.
The intention behind this project is to reach beyond ourselves as individuals to make a difference by creating moments of positive self realization. We're just attempting to make the world a little better.
Intention is the most important aspect of the You Are Beautiful project in its idea of purity. Nothing is sacred. Everything that has a perceived value becomes commodified. We work extremely hard that this message is received as a simple act of kindness, and nothing more.
Advertising elicits a response to buy, where this project elicits a
response to do something. The attempt with You Are Beautiful is to
create activism instead of consumerism. You Are Beautiful uses the medium of advertising and commercialization to spread a positive message. Projects like these make a difference in the world by catching us in
the midst of daily life and creating moments of positive self
realization."
if you want your own stickers to put out in the world and to help spread the message, all you have to do is send a s.a.s.e to the address on their website. or you can put a loved ones name on that envelope and have them get the packet in the mail. which in and of itself is spreading the message.
another way you can get involved is by making your own "you are beautiful" piece. the people at you are beautiful just ask three things of you...
- you do not sell what you make.
- you do not make any products (even given away or free of charge)
- be respectful of your installations.
i can't think of a better way to spend a day. you can check out their website for inspiration. www.you-are-beautiful.com.
