there is something about getting a peak into an artist's studio that can be very exciting in a creative peeping tom sort of way. you get to see where all the magic happens. doubley so when they give you a peak into a series they are working on in their sketch book.
christopher davison sent me some images of inside his studio. there is definite magic happening in there! the photos give you a good idea of how big some of his work is. he also sent me a link to a studio visit he had a while back w/ libby rosof from artblog (which is an awesome art blog based in philadelphia). i loved looking through the photos and didn't feel creeptastic at all about spying.
christopher's website is full of his amazing paintings, drawings and sculpture. as well as projects he's been working on. one such; in love with the devil is a series of drawings christopher started a while back that began w/ one drawing. in his own words:
"the inspiration for this series comes largely from the ills of america. central themes seem to hover around issues including government corruption, superfciality, the decline of education, the decline of culture, rise of relgious fanatiscm and belief in the supernatural, moral decay and the return to animal nature, celebrity worship, military aggression, obesity and over consumption, the arrogant and selfish, and the destruction of our environment."
christopher set out drawing on a weekly basis w/ three guidlines he had to follow: 1). use only 005, 01 and 02 black microns and number 2 pencils, 2). no paint. 3). no color except for slight tea washes. the drawings are intense and abundant w/ imagery of war, savagery, gluttony and waste, but some have small slivers, slight glimmers of hope. the drawings are impressive w/ their line work and detail. what did we ever do before microns?
christopher has a few projects in the works. i'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as more details avail. whatever they are though, i'm more than convinced they will be exciting.
