i've written in the past that john casey's work creeps me out in a good way, and i'm not the only one. nick capasso director of the decordova museum has described john's work as "little exorcisms" . well, he continues to exorcise and i don't think anyone can complain. john's work in general is pretty incredible, his line work is delicate, clean and impeccably drawn. his sculptures are just something else all together. impressive, bizarre and just down right awesome to look at. i asked john what was/is the inspiration behind his new work for his upcoming show at TAG art gallery in nashville w/ josh keyes...
"i often don't try to conceive a specific narrative before i begin a body of work. i try to tap into an intuitive, subconscious, inner narrative and allow it to remain secretive. i let the meaning come to me after the work is done and often it takes weeks and sometimes months to decipher it. this batch of work that is showing at TAG art gallery in nashville in february is still pretty new to me. my approach was to remove the literal references to the human figure and replace those references with a non-flesh but still supple material. this new body of work contains some characters that seem to be made of a sort of burlap. i left some clothing references on the figures to re-inforce the human presence but used the cloth-like material to stand in for people."
you can see more new work of john's on his website. keep tabs on new work in continual process and other musing's like art and such on his blog, and of course go to the show which opens february 2nd at TAG gallery.
