lately, i've been craving books. i spend so much time on the world wide webby it's a nice break to open up a book and read. to feel the pages between my fingers and admire the nice big pictures...as opposed to squinting at the monitor. i'm starting to do that mom thing where i lean my head back and look down my nose at things trying to focus. my gram always said it was hell to get old.
so, i am racking up a nice wish list on amazon. my next purchase is the breaks: stylin' and profilin'. it's a collection of photographs of rappers and the hip hop culture from 1982-1990 from iconic photographer janette beckman. beckman, a photographer for the face (god, i miss that mag!) and the melody maker earlier in her career, has always been one w/ her finger on the pulse. known for her photographs of such heavyweights as the clash, the specials, the police and the ramones. beckman's photographs in the breaks really capture the culture of hip hop. it's an amazing book. it's so cool to see so many artists back in the day looking so young and unfettered. although they are sad to see, i really love the photos of jam master jay, his joy really comes over. the breaks has photographs of many a rap trailblazer including boogie down productions, nwa, roxanne shante, eric b and rakim and the list goes on and on and on and it don't stop. well, it does eventually but you get the point.
