there came a point in the 90's when molly shannon made an abrupt comment on SNL about twenty somethings wearing glitter and hello kitty backpacks that made me incredulously remove the baby barrettes and pixie dust from my repertoire. of course, it's been over a decade since i've reveled in any sort of sparkly dust and hello kitty accoutrement, other than some sparkly eye-shadow and lovely glistening lip gloss. can you hear me pining for that glitter? hell, i am still attracted to anything that sparkles like a moth to a flame. perhaps it's the little girl in me forever trying to get out, who knows, but when faythe levine forwarded me her studio pics of jamie vasta's (and lisa congdon's) studio visit i was floored. WHAT. that's ALL glitter? woah.
melissa feldmen's art in america article sums up jamie's work best: "vasta's use of glitter evokes child's play, fairies and disney associations that prove deliciously at odds w/ the blair witch scenarios." yes! jamie's autumnal macabre situations of beautiful girls w/ blades and blood in their hearts are chilling to look at, but once the viewer realizes they are made almost entirely of glitter it softens the blow. ahhh, glitter is chic again. thank god. jamie is rep'd by patricia sweetow gallery.
