I know Makool loves me because they make adorable must have necklaces like the above beauty. Clearly I need this locket to remind me of my bike that I won't see til...oh I don't know June? This is New England...and I swear winter gets longer and longer each year. I'll need a token to bear witness of my love for my Schwinn as it hibernates in the cellar. Right?
Just in case you forgot Clare Grills' paintings rule the school, yep, that's pretty much all there is to it. Her broad strokes smeared with color are so juicy and beautiful. They drip with intensity and life. Definitely one of my favorite painters for sure. Her talent rings loud and clear. Clare has a few shows ongoing and coming up, check her website to find out more.
Perhaps it's a weird juxtaposition to choose these two prints from the Klein Family...such different icons, Milk and Castro. But truth be told they both remind of San Francisco, my old home, if only in name only (Castro). They are both, in their own right equally sharp and perfect for the whole 'one for me, one for you' holiday shopping scheme I seem to love to take part in. Plus how could you not want to purchase from a family of artists whose profile says, in one line: We are lovers of nature, gardens and revolutionary ideas and people.
As I was looking over Tilman Faelker's I asked him to tell me about the pixelated areas in his work. I was hoping that it was on purpose and not just a shoddy scan:
At the moment I'm experimenting with digital distortion to find a digital equivalent to my sketchy handrawing...It's all about finding an aesthetic that doesn't hide its origin: my illustrations are all based on a pencil sketch (which is clearly visible) but they are all going through a digital "stage" in which I try to treat them in the same sketchy manner as I draw them, but this time with tools that are clearly digital...
Neat, right? I'm impressed with the deliberate fuzziness and pixelation. See more of Tilman's work here.
Sarah Gottesdiener sent me a few images of her work, including some from her series of 20 portraits of Yoko Ono, and a pic of her pitbull. How could I not be smitten? I love how Sarah has captured Yoko Ono. There is a roughness to her work that somehow translates the subject into a tangible softness. Whatever that means, did I just type that out loud? Jeez. Ten hour work days do not bode well. Well, I do think that Yoko has always had this ethereal softness about her and Sarah captures that well. Anyhoo, Sarah has illustrated for peeps like The Ace Hotel, Uniqlo and Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. She'll have a show up at Stumptown in PDX in February. Watch this lady...they'll be much more from her no doubt.
