I love centaurs and gnomes just as much as the next art blogger, so obviously when I saw the work of Toronto artist, André Ethier, I was tickled. I first viewed some paintings of his at the 2008 Armory Show in New York. In fact, his work is one of the only things I've remembered from that show. His tripped-out, scumbled oil paintings screamed for my attention. I'm thinking Jim Henson meets Frank Frazetta meets 60's kitsch? Unbeknownst to me, Ethier really made his name as the singer for the now defunct indie band, The Deadly Snakes.
If you happen to be in the Boston-area, you can see some of his work at MassArt's Bakalar Gallery in the group show, 'Figuratively Seeing'. The work is up until March 3rd.
