*****This is the second installment of ML4U's ongoing series Process/Inspiration where I ask an artist to take a post and do
whatever they would like with it, just as long as they represent their
process or inspiration in some way. This weeks guest is Michael Hsiung, an artist who's drawing and sense of humor I always enjoy. Comment section is open for discussion with the artist. Enjoy! ~meighan*****
A wide shot of my drawing space. As you can see I have lots of unicorn stuff that I've accumulated. Did I mention I love narwhals even more? I do. Here's a shot of my sketch book, which I don't really sketch in. Sometimes, but not sketches you'd imagine. The book slowly gets filled up with lists and lists. Another drawing in progress I was working on for a friend's album, which will be pressed onto vinyl. Our apartment is something like a collection of strange things. I think they find ways into the things I draw. You can see part of a whale harpoon someone gave me at an opening once in the right upper corner. There's a giant scanned painting of that actor in Magnolias that I found at a thrift store. Oh yeah some framed laser discs and my records. You gotta keep good files if you're trying to do art full time. Postage is by far my biggest expense.More notes of a madman.Perhaps the only sketch in my sketchbook. It's going to be a narwhal.I got some shirts I designed for the Henry Clay People the other day. Look another narwhal reference. I love mermen, second only to narwhals. Some cardboard drawings I did for a show a while back. I generally start using all my materials at hand... most of these are backings to matted sticker paper packs.Bear and Man form theatrical pose! This picture pretty much represents my week - Art Party #2 flyer, my new glasses, and my porcelain crown that fell out.Scored this amazing Metallica record. Perhaps the only thing I spend my money on. It has 1990 interviews of mainly Lars (unfortunately), but a great find nonetheless.Someone's tattoo based off a drawing I had done of a narwhal impaling a penguin.Stick Me was a collaborative sticker book I participated in and I was really excited to get the cover.Nothing like drinking and drawing.I won an Oscar for best glasses and hair.I love mermen and mermaids! I really do, but I own way more narwhal stuff. Here's an awesome statue I got for X-mas. My favorite part is the artist's card attached to it. He looks like such a badass. Anyhow, thank you for letting me share my collection of art and oddities.
