Along with seeing some really great work from Kevin E. Taylor last week, we also talked a lot about other artists and friends whom he admired. The first being Kim Alsbrooks. He linked me to her work and I swore audibly! Kim's work is awesome on so many levels, rife with intent and meaning.
Kim takes white trash to a whole new level and meaning in her White Trash Series. After living in the South for some time, Kim became frustrated with the prevalent naive and romantic history all around her. Her White Trash Series explores Southern ideology and her perception of it. In her words, she felt: "This ideology seems [to be] based on a combination of myth, biased history and a bizarre sentimentality about old wars and social structures." Kim takes this sentimental social structure and quite literally lays it in the trash with her own sentimentality all over it. Yesssss.
Kim's White Trash Series will be on display at the Bambi Gallery in Philadelphia, June 2nd through the 27th.
