I recently found Lauren Cohen's work through New American Paintings new blog (be sure to check that out fyi), and was instantly smitten with her sly humor and colorful work. Lauren is interested in the weirdness and at times bizarre behavior that often occurs through power struggles in everyday relationships. She describes her work as 'numb automatons who crowd a naive candy-coated utopia.' Perfect.
A few of my favorites of Lauren's are 'Let's Do It Together' and 'Watching Oakland Go Round To Thou', I'll let you work out why.
Lauren is currently in a residency at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine. She tells me she is getting back to her New England roots and exploring and pushing her work. She'll be sharing newer work with us in the next few weeks.
