Lello//Arnell's fascination with history and their shrines to it are just that, fascinating. I asked Jørgen Lello to tell me about their work:
"We're very interested in history, and a lot of our work has its starting points in anecdotes from history, or generally interesting - and sometimes obscure - historical accounts. We try to use history as a lens through which to view our own time critically.
It can be very easy when looking back on historical events and societies to see lapses in logic, cruelty and injustice based on ignorance or just generally world views that appear as very distant to us. Rather than letting their short-comings fuel our sense of superiority (after all, where would we have been without their successes - as well as their failures), it should inspire us to look at ourselves with the same critical frame of mind. What incomprehensible stupidity are we up to on a daily basis, that will fill many a classroom with laughter in the centuries to come?"
Many of their sculptures are tributes to these historical events...my favorite with out a doubt is The New Ritual (The Franklin Principle) #1 & #2. Check it out, I think you'll really dig it!
