About to Sail: All Your Love was Wasted? Who the Hell was I?
About five years ago a friend of mine bought me the cutest little zippered pouch at APE in San Francisco from Caroline Hwang. I still have it and love it just as much. Probably the first thing that drew me to Caroline's work is the quilting aspects of her work. A perfect example of her craft is in her series of nautical flags: In this on-going series, I use nautical signaling flags as a backdrop.
These nautical flags are mainly used in communication between two ships
or between ship and shore. The shapes, colors, color blocks of each
flag can be used separately or in combination with one another to
communicate different meanings. In the natural state of the flags the
colors are distinct and can not be easily mistaken for one another. I
chose to change the colors to a more subdued state to portray that
communication isn’t necessarily so clear when relayed between humans.
Although the meanings of the flags remain the same it takes on a
duality when presented with the paintings incorporated into them.
