I was just trolling around on flickr and saw this magnificent paste up by miso. I can't even imagine the delicacy it took to roll this onto the wall. She is by far one of my favorite street artists around today. Total talent. I have the below drawing on my desk top, and I love it and if I had one wish it would be that it was a drawing on my wall.

Hello! This is Corey Corcoran and first off, I'd like to say how cool it is to be guest blogging here for the next couple of days. Although I do a fair share of internet art gazing, having to sit down and figure out some of my biggest art crushes has definitely put some new brain muscles to work. The artists I've come up with whether I know them or not are people who I think are making crazy important things. Let me know what you think...
First up is Maya Bloch out of Tel Aviv. Her flickr page is like a force of nature and worth constant checking-in. To me, her work is that hit-you-over-the-head kind of art that makes you wonder why this artist's name isn't always on the tip of your tongue. One of the most appealing aspects to her work are the dreamy, timeless spaces they inhabit. Many of her pieces feel like memories or old photographs but the figures engage with the viewer in what feels like very contemporary ways. Maya is able to produce an astounding range of effects with few materials. As someone who is guilty of using the whole box of crayons whenever making a picture, I look to her work for a reminder that complex, resonate imagery can be made with just a pencil and eraser.
probably one of my favorite blogs, kris from krisatomic always posts the most crisp, lush photographs. i have no idea when i first stumbled on her blog...but i've been reading it for at least a year and i am always lost in her world. kris takes photos of her everyday life, and boy does it look romantic. take for instance her latest post where she uploaded some pics of her work as a stylist's assistant. ummm, WOW. better than a fashion mag. kris' easy going, relaxed attitude makes her blog sooo user friendly too. no pretense, she just is. adorable that is.

ok, the best thing about blogging is you meet so many amazing peeps that you probably never would have had the opportunity to otherwise. i recently have been emailing w/ hernán paganini, a graphic designer from buenos aires. his emails are kind, sweet and cheerful...always signed w/ "mountains of color, hernán ._.". ummm, how frickin cute is that? hernán told me a little bit about himself:
"i am inspired by everything that surrounds me, i am amazed easily as a child, playing with this environment, the actors, situations that happen within and that somehow affect me, i try to transform my daily reality, as a result emerge moments of life through materializing the sensations that i have inside.
since i was a child, i collected and sorted things i found in the street. with the passing of time this material became my raw material to develop much of my work.
impassioned, the heart awaits the passage of time to become a child again."
i think you can see why i would be taken w/ hernán and his work. i am always drawn to people that have an enthusiasm that should be bottled and sold as an elixir. recently, hernán made an amazing planter w/ found material. i'm in love w/ it. what i wouldn't do to have one in our yard and on our porch, or in fact in my bedroom. see more of hernán's work on his flickr page.

lisa marie godfrey's dream guides are a reinterpretation of vintage photographs. haunting and beautifully charming, i asked lisa marie to tell me a little about them, specifically the symbolism of the veils. she describes them:
the dream guides are those we see in our dreams that do not exist in waking life. it isn't clear what their purpose is. some are strangers, others you may feel you know very well. they are always very mysterious beings and that is why many of them wear veils. the vintage photographs are also mysterious, beautiful, often distinguished portraits of people who i question ever existed. i like the idea of combining these two groups of beings that behave similarly, they belong to the same family and should be reunited.
i really appreciated what she had to say. i've always been fascinated w/ old photographs. who are these peeps? what were their lives like? i love lisa marie's treatment of them. these paintings will be in a group show, shoot from the hip, opening at artstorm in houston, tx on may 3rd.
adam padavano has a sensitivity that comes across in his painting. i was first drawn to adam's work because of the colors and layers of things happening all in one piece. i was kept when i heard of adam's unique way of working...he often paints a piece, takes a break then continues to add more and more until the first painting no longer exists and a new one has emerged. i asked adam to describe his work to me:
"i am inspired by nature, basically, i feed my spirit with visits to forests, beaches, farms, anywhere there is wildlife i think we, as humans, want simplicity. it is a natural want and need.
a lot of times i will start a painting or drawing, and feverishly dump a lot of information onto the surface. it's a cathartic unloading of recent experiences and thoughts. following that is a lot of editing, veiling over excess info with gesso. and the process repeats."
yeah, i was taken w/ it as well. i can't say enough how much i enjoy adam's work. i especially like his lil' paintings, they have a way of really speaking to my new england upbringing. it could be the fire engine red paint he uses or just the way in which he treats them. regardless i'm a big fan.
stine belden røed at the moment is working on her bachelor's in visual communication at bergen national college of the arts in norway. i found her quirky charcoal drawings and colorful digital collages on flickr and immediately loved them. her colors are so rich and vivid. her drawings of peeps so odd and malformed they're almost sweet. see more on her flickr page.
i love travis stearns' digital collages. and for all you type/font freaks out there, you'll love him too, promise. his flickr page is over flowing w/ collages and fonts galore, satisfying all of us. travis was recently featured in the current issue of print magazine as a new visual artist of 2008, it's clear why, duh. check out travis' self assigned project, DVL (daily visual language), where he makes an image everyday. describing it as: "daily visual language (DVL) is a self-initiated strategy focusing on the exploration and furthering of fundemental design practices and visual grammar." pretty rad.
i'm not sure about you, but i'm a bit of a late bloomer. at one point in my life, i was sure of my career. then one day, i woke up and poof. i realized i never wanted to do that again. kind of like that scene in bottle rocket when anthony says "not only did i not want to answer that question, but i realized i never wanted to answer another question about water sports again.". yeah, kind of like that. so when i stumble upon young talent who are so clearly following their dreams, i am always so blown away.
i'm not sure where i first saw kiddet's work. i sent her an email asking to post about her work, asking about any shows, prints etc. she wrote back very sweetly giving me her real name, telling me she lives in stockholm and is in high school at the moment. wow. i love her delicate illustrations and dark water colors. i can't wait to see more. keep an eye on kiddet's flickr page and her blog.
what is it about dark chocolate? i don't know about you, but a few bites of that yummy goodness and i've got reason to live again. ok, jk. i jk. but this being the second day of spring and all, i have to say is i have cabin fever like it's nobody's business and so therefore, i blog to you about it. in these early spring days when i crave light, heat and life in general i am really appreciating eric shaws' work. he's been uploading daily on his flickr site. his color pieces drip w/ bright wonder. his blk and white are scribbled w/ so much to look at. i've actually subscribed to his flickr page...isn't technology such a smarty pants? alright, let's stop w/ the words and give you art. less talk. more art. more bettah...one last thing, eric will have a zine out in april w/ islands fold.
i'm eating hershey's kisses, watching law and order and planning (in my head) my wardrobe for a trip to my old life in sf this coming thursday. what the eff can you bring on the plane now?! i can't ever keep track. jeez. anyhoo, let's zone out on masha krasnova-shabaeva's awesome illustrations instead of being responsible. yes? yes, we shall.
masha is an illustrator living in moscow her work has appeared in rolling stone, esquire and whole slew of analogue mags (yeah, that's right i said analogue.). i love how she erases, add masks or just throws flowers and colored shapes over the features on her subjects faces. that would be a nice trick in real life; hey can i just cover your face up w/ flowers? check out more of masha's work here, here and here.
