Domy Books is a progressive bookstore with a focus on editioned books, periodicals, video, and product lines that concentrate on national and international contemporary art and culture.

There are locations in Houston and Austin. I'm only familiar with the Austin location and it has blown me away with its atmosphere, provisions, and generosity. I dropped in one evening and was warmly greeted by co-founder Russell Etchen. 

Domy hosts screenings, exhibitions, music events, and good times galore. 

Russell also has a drawing club, that ummm how do I put this, draw. Is this neat?
Yes, its! On saturdays, members of Sketch Klubb get together and doodle up the universe. 

vote for survival prints at needles + pens.

In October I posted images of Nikki McClure's show Vote for Survival at Needles + Pens. Now the beautiful prints are available through N+P. I know so many people who would be stoked to receive one of these lovelies as a gift this holiday season. You'd have to be silly to not want one of Nikki's prints. Not only is her work beautifully done, stark with sharp contrast and feeling but I think that these prints say so much about the era we live in at the moment. Perfectly apt.

here shop and gallery just celebrated their 5th anniversary, what better way to celebrate then by having a party with some talented people and the print gocco?

we feel that the accessibility of print gocco reflects our own DIY ethos in running a gallery, and so have chosen to celebrate our 5th anniversary with a group show of gocco based artwork. to accompany the exhibition, we will be releasing a portfolio of gocco prints, produced in a signed and numbered edition of 50, collected in a custom made presentation box.

we’ve selected artists who look beyond the limitations of the device, to show that it can also be used to produce fine art works. those involved are from a range of disciplines; textile design, fine art, illustration, graphic design, and animation.

fabric 8 blog.

fabric 8 just joined the blogosphere.  which is awesome, now we can keep up on all the new stuff in their sf boutique/gallery.  i personally love these paintings by daniel fleres.  they're so cute, i kind of want to eat them.  anybody else have that overwhelming feeling w/ adorable-ness?  if you are interested in these sweet paintings, i'd get a move on, as one has already sold.

nature freak: matt furie.

while i was at 49 geary, i also stopped by the jack fischer gallery to say hello to jack and check out the matt furie show, nature freak.  matt's drawings are always full of amazing detail and color.  as usual there was a lot of naughtiness going on in his work.  robots and tree ladies havin' a blast, birdies and rainbows co-mingling.  it's enough to get a girl to blush, whilst still stealing glances!  i love how his brain works.  it was nice to get in to see the show before it closed.  you can check out the full show on the jack fischer gallery.

p.s. the image below isn't in the show, but it is one of the first pieces i ever saw of matt's...and i just love it.  just look at how happy that lil guy is!

days are flying by here, and i'm loath to find a reliable internerd connection at my friends house.  so apologies for sparse posting.

zefrey and i went by 49 geary to check out some galleries.  at my friend katie's insistence and zefrey's as well, we stopped by steven wolf fine arts to check out the shows that are up there til friday.  tami demaree half an inch of water and i think i'm gonna drown and matt borruso full spectrum aura.  ummmm.  WOW, is all i have to say.  each show's works are so brilliant and alive.  i was completely blown away by the amount of color and electricity in the room.  both artists have an incredible sense of humor, and the talent to back it up.

super stoked i checked out this show.  i've fallen in love w/ both artists...and will be checking them religiously from now on.

interview: kirsten anderson of roq la rue.

a good friend recently put me in touch w/ kirsten anderson the owner of Roq La Rue gallery, co-owner of BLVD gallery, editor-at-large of hi fructose magazine and blogger of 'right some good' (the latter two being regular readings of mine).  pheww!  as you guessed she is a very busy gal, and was kind enough to correspond w/ me via email for an interview.  not only does kirsten have an impeccable eye when it comes to art, she is also incredibly down to earth and gracious.  i was delighted to get to talk w/ her.  kirsten clearly has her finger on the pulse of the low brow/contemporary art world, showing some of the best talent there is today.

kirsten talks about being a gallerist, past shows she's loved, art she owns and favorite works.  she also gives some great tips if you are a new artist trying to get a galleries attention.  i hope you enjoy the interview!

so lets get to the basics...have you always been interested in art?  did you dream as a little girl of growing up and owning one of the best, cutting edge low brow/pop surrealist galleries?  how did you get into this aspect of the art world?  what made you want to open your own gallery?

i have always been into art, my parents were artists so it was always around me.  i thought i would be a painter- it never, ever occurred to me to be a gallery owner.  i really decided to open a gallery when i first became aware of lowbrow art.  i loved it and wanted to be around it.  it was more sort of punk rock at the time and it seemed like you could have a gallery without a lot of money and it would be ok.  it was a new ideology about art that never occurred to me before.   previously art was something to be in a museum like setting, in my mind anyway.  when the thought formed in my brain that I could open a space, something in my brain clicked and i really never looked back.  i'm not sure how to explain it.  i can't even say it's my "calling" because there are many other things i'd like to do with my life...but it certainly seems i was meant to be a galleriest, at least for awhile!

are you an artist yourself?

i used to be but i haven't done any artwork since i opened the gallery a decade ago. first of all, i wasn't really that good of a painter and i found it really frustrating, secondly i don't think you can be an artist and also run a gallery effectively.  you have to be fully focused on a gallery and if you are pulled away from it by trying to do your own art it doesn't work out well.

you co-opened BLVD gallery to encourage seattle's vibrant street art scene and to showcase some of the best names in street/urban art.  what made you decide to open another gallery?

most of the stuff i do occurs to me as random thoughts when i'm on the bus or in a cafe.  it just occurred to me that the street art scene was blowing up and i couldn't believe there wasn't a gallery in seattle devoted to it...so i decided to do it.  that said, i would not have done it if one of my partners and the director of the gallery, damion hayes, didn't agree to come on board.  he's the expert on street art.

you recently became the editor-at-large at hi fructose magazine you also started 'right some good, yes, it's another art blog'.  you feature incredible art, i'm always blown away by the work you feature.  how do you do it all?  honestly your life sounds like an art maven's dream come true!

thanks! the blog is purely a hobby to get myself writing and thinking about art on a daily basis. there is so much amazing art, and this way i can blog about really great art i might not have the opportunity to showcase through the gallery because it's from another time period or it's not genre appropriate. the blog is fun because I can be really casual and i think it makes it easier for people to talk to me or about the art because we're not being lofty about it at all. i have to be more formal with the gallery because i have to and should be.

the hi fructose thing came about because i was writing for them as well as several other magazines about art and i really, really dig what they are doing. i told them i wanted to just help out anyway they needed because i know the burnout factor can be high when you do everything yourself like Atta and Annie (the owner's of hi fructose) do. they asked me to hop on board so i said yes. it's really exciting to help be a part of something so neat. i like that i'm helping their vision because most of the time i'm so focused on mine. as far as being an art maven's dream, i can't complain because i love what i do, but it's also filled with annoyances and disillusionment, as much as any other job.

when you look back on the past 10 yrs what goes through your mind?  

i'm pretty amazed. i was pretty lazy in my 20's and i can't believe i am the workaholic that i am today. the best way to sum it up is several years ago i was cleaning my windows or something and i thought about how my 14 year old self would have thought the current me had the coolest life ever. so i felt like i accomplished something i guess. i'm usually always looking towards the next thing.

you've exhibited some incredible talent in the past ten yrs.  who are some of your favorites?  what were some of your most memorable shows?  

hmmm. so many! the camille rose garcia and marion peck show was pretty amazing.  ialways love my halloween group shows because i am all about the macabre and campy monsters.  lori earley had her first solo show with me and it was fantastic.  i had a dan clowes and chris ware show that was popular to say the least.  and i just had a show with scott musgrove, brian despain,and ryan heshka

it seems like we have so many names for contemporary art nowadays: counter-culture, low brow, urban contemporary, etc.   it can be confusing to figure out what is what for people who are not familiar. (even contemporary art is a category in and of it's own!)  what's your feeling on the term "low brow".  can you talk a little bit about the many terms and labels and what you prefer?

oh boy.  well, all those names are for contemporary art that segmented off into different little scenes, but the irony is that they are all mashing together again.  to me, lowbrow was what was happening in the early days when there was a group of mostly southern california who were doing really vibrant and provocative art.  at the time no one would ever have thought it'd become what is has.  as time went on and more artists have come into the fold it begot pop surrealism which is more formal and less "edgy", but more dreamlike and refined.  street art seemed to be a whole different genre but those edges are fuzzy as there are artists who can really cross over multiple genres.  it's really all just contemporary art to me at this point.  contemporary art by artists who actually know how to draw.

if you had to choose your most favorite piece of art, what would it be and why? (feel free to name a couple, if it's too hard!)  

that is really hard.  i tried to name six of my favorite paintings on the blog and i only could do two! probably my most favorite painting that i never get bored of is "the sleeping gypsy" by henri rousseau.  i think it was a painting that really affected me as a kid and went right into my brain.  as far as what i own...it's almost impossible for me to pick.  i have a little drawing by femke hiemstra that i love to look at, and i just bought a small painting by darren waterston that i have to pick up still.  he's one of my most favorite artists ever, and i'm thrilled out of my mind i have a painting because i never thought i'd be able to get one.  i got to meet him recently and i was nervous...if he was a jerk i was worried it may ruin my feelings for his art, but luckily he was super sweet, so that made buying the painting all the better.

what do you have hanging in your house?

my house is understandably crammed full of art, my husband likes buying it as much as i do! the artist list is long but we have work by people like mark ryden, liz mcgrath, lori earley, xiaoqing ding, lauie hogin, darren waterston, david choe, lots of old school lowbrow.  we also collect anything unusual that strikes our fancy.  i have a carved indonesian garuda sculpture that looks very big daddy roth-ish which i love, and we just bought a set of chinese gates that we have to find something to do with.

you deal w/ artists all the time, do you have any advice for someone starting out?  do have any pointers for artists when they are approaching galleries?

i know it's really frustrating for new artists...but seriously people need to do a little research.  some little things that matter are things like not cc'ing a bunch of galleries in one email saying "hey, look at my work!"...that seems desperate and like you don't care where you show.  take the time to find out where your work would be appropriate and then take the time to send them an email or submission individually.  also, spell the name of the person you are emailing right.  a gallery will know right away if they can work with you, so don't keep asking the same gallery if they have not gotten back to you.  don't take it personally as hard as it may be, it really is a matter if they think they can sell it to their collector base, it doesn't necessarily mean they think you suck.  another thing i've noticed with a lot of young artists getting picked up by galleries and so many new galleries opening...getting something in writing isn't a bad idea, especially if the gallery is new and unproven.

what is coming up at both Roq la Rue and BLVD that you are especially excited about in 2008?  

to be honest i am kind of removed from BLVD these days, damion has really taken it over and i'm glad. he's doing awesome. at Roq La Rue i have all kinds of great stuff lined up.  i'm super excited to have a show in the fall with victor castillo, and we will doing a big show with dan quintana which i'm psyched about.  we have a few group shows that should be knockouts as well.  oh, and travis louie and femke hiemstra!  and esao andrews and fuco ueda!  pretty much all my shows i'm excited about, i'm lucky in that i can book only artists i think are amazing.

often times uprooting ourselves can have a profound impact on our perception of the world.  anna kipervaser traveled w/in the middle east last winter and was moved and inspired to create her latest series, birds.

"the things that have always interested me, in learning as well as in making, have had to do with difference and separation between people and the folklore attached.  i am interested in finding the rift that separates groups of people, feeling it out for myself, and in creating my own mythology in my work.  when i paint, i tend to use birds as the unification of the differences, so as to bring about a distance to the socio-political issues at the core of the divide between the peoples whom the work is about.  my work is about culture; it's about renovating and transforming the facets of social systems.

having been born in soviet ukraine, and immigrating as a refugee with my family to the u.s., i have lived much of my life trying to at once escape and embrace the sense of being an outsider in america - as a foreigner first, and now as an artist.  the lack of connectedness i feel to my mother country and to my adoptive land is what pushes me to explore new territory.  it is precisely that which inspires me to enter into different cultures and learn about the people, especially the outsiders, intimately."

preachin' to the choir: takashi iwasaki.

oh color.  i crave it so badly, now in the dead of winter.  and who better than to deliver a good ol' remedy of vibrant bursts of color than takashi iwasaki.  like his artist's statement says so eloquently, he believes:

"life is too short to take gravely all the time. i want to delight in what i can when i can. having this as my essential philosophy, my goal of art making is to create a positive and playful atmosphere, and generate warm feelings of intimacy and substance through my work."

sing it sister, can i get an amen to that!  always a fan of process, craft and color i am completely drawn to takashi's work.  playful, fun and beautiful, everybody needs a good dose of his work on daily basis.  takashi's got a lot going on this very moment, perhaps you can join in.  he's part of all of the following group shows:  isolating inspiration, at atelier gallery in vancouver, opened on the 27th w/  an opening this saturday from 2-4.  tinlark gallery, in hollywood, celebrates their first anniversary w/ an ongoing show, time flies.  and last but not least, oh eight, opens today at le gallery in toronto.  also, if you live in the netherlands, be on the look out for an interview in textiel plus magazine in the coming months w/ takashi.  go, takashi go!

chris pew makes me want to cry.

chris pew's art blows me away.  his paintings are prolific in color and design.  i look at them and i kind of want to cry they're so amazing.  chris' inspiration is based on his interpretation of scientific theories: "ideas of an abstract cosmos and different trajectories for the unobservable universe."   you can check out his beautiful work on his website or check it out it in person.  he's got a show right now at white walls sf w/ alex lukas and amy casey.  there is only a little over a week left in the show.  so if you are in the tenderloin, you know, just hangin' and bangin'  and wheelin' and dealin 'make sure you stop by.  i wish i could, but like an old friend's dad used to say, if wishes were horses we'd all ride to the fair.

monica johnson.

in an age where over-saturation is the gold standard, it's refreshing to stumble upon an artist who is almost hidden from the web's ever reaching long tentacles.  artists have so many outlets, avenues and vessels to showcase their work, which in no way is a bad thing.  but sometimes it's a real treat to see talent that isn't everywhere.

so when i recently found monica johnson's work through the jack fischer gallery, i was intrigued.  jack fischer gallery is really the only place one can find monica's work.  so it was only natural that i was taken w/ her work.  anything that is interesting, thought provoking and elusive and i'm sold, hook, line and sinker. i mean who isn't?

monica's work is a range of chalkboards, drawings, embroidery, gouache and the list doesn't stop there.  monica's sense of humor is unexpected and well done in her work.  it's what initially drew me in.  her beautifully drawn, childlike limerick on a chalkboard made me smile.   her style and technique is what kept me.  at the moment monica is at pratt working on an mfa in painting.  her work continues to grow and expand.  so the web may not have swallowed her whole yet, but i do believe we will be seeing more of monica.  at least i hope so.  any interest in her work should be directed to the jack fischer gallery.

french at analogue books.

french is an illustrating, tea drinking, metal loving lad who lives in london.  if you've seen his drawings you know the talent he posseses; intricate, beautiful images not often w/out a bit of humor thrown in.  his new show high priestess of the woods opens w/ a preview tonight at analogue books in edinburgh.  recently french and i finally got our instant messaging schedules on par and had a little chat.  below is excerpts from some of it.  i had a blast talking w/ french.  he's not only unbelievably talented, he's also completely hilarious.  i strongly suggest you check out his blog for his hilarity, daily life of skating, road trips, metal consumption and continual uploads of current work.

meighan: hello?

french:  yeah man...safe, what up!

meighan:  haha. ok, finally!

french:  yeah, no shit.

meighan:  ok, cool. so... you live in croydon?

french:  yeah...we'll thornton heath...it's very close.

meighan: i lived in london illegally for almost 2 yrs.

french: hahaha!  doesn't everyone?

meighan:  yeah, it's a barrel of laughs.  haha.  ok so let's get this started... ready?
set...go!  ok...your drawings are so wonderful...how long have you been drawing?

french:  well since I was 3?

meighan:  what did you draw when you were a kid? i was big into butterflies.

french:  yeah, i always drew...my mum was really into getting me to draw.  she used to work at an art college and i could go and meet all the students and see the work.

meighan: so you were inspired from early on.

french:  i really loved drawing tanks and people being shot.

meighan:  that's awesome.  do you still have your drawings?

french:  yeah, i was always inspired by killing.  and tanks and guns.  yeah, some, i think.  my granny used to keep them on the inside of the larder door and date them.  i think my parents threw them out.

meighan:  oh, that's too bad.

french:  yeah...it's cool.

meighan: did you go to school for art?

french: yeah, i did a foundation and I have a 1st class honours in fine art.  i went to staffordshire uni and spent a year at KU in  lawrence, kansas.

meighan:  what did you think of kansas?

french:  it was fucking...the best place on earth.  i made the best friends and did the craziest things.

meighan:  haha, that's awesome. i wouldn't think that kansas would be described that way. when were you there?

french:  2000 to 2001. it's sick!!!

meighan:  ha. what did you get up to while you were there? any art related stuff or just general mayhem?

french:  well, studied...made art. shot guns, road horses, drove tractors, skateboarding, parties, women, tornado chasing, pizza, house parties, women, metal, fights...making the best friends ever.

meighan:  that sounds amazing...esp. the tornado chasing and pizza part. do you work full time as an illustrator?

french:  yeah man...i just draw...

meighan:  you've done a lot of product for companies esp. skate companies. who has been your favorite to work for?

french:  yeah, i seem to be getting alot of skate stuff.  and i love it...a dream come true.  my favourite was creature skateboards.

meighan:  yeah, you seem to lead a really charmed life. what did you do for them?

french:  i did a shirt and 2 boards for them. yeah...i dunno i think it's just good karma.  i don't really go looking.  i just try and dream and send people stuff and make work that's true to me.

meighan:  well, judging by your blog it seems to be really working for you.  do you wake up everyday totally stoked?

french:  i hope so.  i'm so scared that i'll wake up one morning and no one will ever want more work from me.  but i think i'd still do it all the same.

meighan:  i don't think you need to worry about it.

french:  i don't worry, not every day...but most...usually after the book of the week reading on radio 4 and just before i listen to metal and draw some more.  i thank fuck it's like this.

meighan:  haha. right, let's talk about your love of metal.  just go for it... what is it about metal?

french:  metal is life.  i love metal.  i love it like you love a mum.  i fucking love it.

meighan:  haha... ok and the combination of the two is like heaven on earth?

french:  yes. i mean....some times i'll listen to an album i haven't heard in a while and it'll be like meeting an old friend.

meighan:  can you give me an example?

french:  well...right i was listening to born again...this a soft metal one for you.

meighan:  right.

french:  yeah, i was listening to that on the train...it's the sabbath album with ian gilan. and i just wanna cry i love it so much.  i cant explain.

meighan:  how does metal influence your work?

french:  i'm like that with all ozzy.  well, you've seen my work.  but i don't just draw pictures of metal bands.

meighan:  no, you don't.

french:  i hate that people seem to think that i only like to draw pictures of like judas priest.  i enjoy the themes and old english or horror ideas that metal has.

meighan:  right, well that can be a bummer to be pigeoned holed.  but your stuff isn't all guts and gore.

french:  nah, its' not.

meighan:  can you tell me a little bit about high priestess of the woods, your show for analogue books?

french:  i really like drawing intricate things.  yeah, sure...what would  you like to know?  it was a drawing i've had for a while in pencil and i just finished it.

meighan:  what are the drawings like...what was the inspiration behind them?  the pics that you sent me, will they be in the show?

french: well, it's a collection of woods and forest style stuff, with knights and animals.  all black and white. yeah, they're in it.  there's a zine with most of the work in it too.

meighan:  they're all really beautiful.  will the zine be available from analogue?

french:  cheers, yeah...i try and to make them that way.  yeah...it's gonna be 100 copies for them and i have 50 limited edition shirts.

meighan:  you've given t's away for free in the past at shows... any such luck this time?

french:  yeah...sort of.  i think that it's gonna be a zine and shirt for £15.  it's a good, big zine.

meighan:  nice.  will you have any prints available or just drawings?

french:  there's gonna be a wall of prints...all pretty cheap and another wall of drawings and a painting on the wall.

meighan:  oh cool...i wanted to ask you, your drawings are so intricate and amazing.  how do you feel after spending days on a wall drawing/mural to know it will be painted over in a month?

french:  well it's all good...it looked good once and it's for the moment, not for keeps.  that's what makes it better...no one can have it.

meighan:  that's a great attitude. who are some of your favorite artists?

french: aubrey beardsley, gustav dore, sime, putrid, john martin, james unsworth.

meighan:  do you have more shows coming up? what are your plans for 2008?

french:  i'm doing a store take over for carharrt in march at the covent garden store. 
i get to redesign the whole store.

motel gallery closes. (sad emoticon goes here.)

i was so saddened when i clicked on over to motel a few weeks ago and saw the goodbye letter form the proprietress jenn armbrust.  i was never able to visit motel in person, but it was a frequent link for me, hell i had it in my toolbar.  i first heard about motel about 5 yrs ago.  in that time span i have been introduced to so many new artists and products, thanks to the amazing curatorial eye of jenn.   just to name a few: megan whitmarsh, jen corace, carson ellis, ryan jacob smith.  below are some of the pieces motel has had in past shows.  it will be sad to have that hole here on the web and in real time.  but from the sounds of jenn's open letter it sounds like she has many more, wonderful endeavors in her future.  goodbye motel and good luck jenn!
