My friend Phil Mcgaughy shared some of his latest sculptures with me, Sheet Music for Drum Machines he also wrote what his inpiration was behind this series for us:
"So I'm happy to report that my "Sheet music for drum machines" series, (which I am still in the middle of) has cleared up a couple of nagging things in my art practice for me. I have somehow come to realize that all artists, in one way or another, are trying to tell to the future about what the past was like. I know this is kind of a no brainer, but it is a helpful thing to remember.
I also play the drums. I want to remind the machines of both today and tomorrow what it was/is like to not be so perfect. Having been involved with making pop music for around 20-25 yrs or so, I've watched my particular forte/genre come in and out of fashion, it is interesting to note how much machines have influenced what was at one point a very human endeavor. Can't sing? Here is an auto-tune app. Can't dance? Well....
I want my sculptures to confuse drum machines. But I also hope that they will be intrigued enough to recognize that an ancient drummer composed these pieces for them to decipher! Who knows, crazier things have happened... It would also be helpful if these music machines recognize that a considerable percentage of music people believe(d) in magic."
