Time lapse of Mike Maxwell's, painting created over 2 days at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, Ca. Thank God for video cameras, you tube and creative spirits.
Walrus TV are killing it with their interviews lately. The latest is of Kottie Paloma. Besides getting a sneak into Kottie's world, one of the best parts is his mention of Donut World on Market street in SF. It's one of the many amazing and bizarre things about SF: you can get donuts, burgers and Chinese food all under one roof in many a location. Kottie's work rules.
Here's a video of Know Hope's installation at Carmichael Gallery in LA that opened the beginning of the month. Hmmm, kinda looks like Boston, with all that rain...yet not as gray, way serene and actually nothing like Boston. There was something like 40,000 raindrops cut out for this install.
Woah.
Oh man, viral videos make me realize what a twisted sense of humor I can posses. I'm not sure what's up with why the beginning of these videos have to be so painful, but Fatso the cat playing the piano as the follow up is ridiculously hysterical and totally needed on a Monday.
Lisa Marie Godfrey posted this clip on Facebook, and it brought me right back to a few years ago when I first discovered Art:21. I watched all the clips on Margaret Kilgallen obsessively. When I first heard of Margaret in the early 2000's, what blew me away was that she was a street artist that was influenced by folk art. It was both dynamic and unconventional. She was so talented, and soooo ahead of her time, total renegade. Anyway, I just wanted to post it because I believe she is a truly inspirational woman who beyond her life continues to inspire. If you are a fan of Margaret's I strongly encourage you to get In The Sweet Bye & Bye. Giant Robot was rad enough to take on the 2nd reprinting of this book.
amy over at pikaland posted this animated video by julia pott last week. i LOVE casiotone for the painfully alone. this video is so cute i might just kill myself, i can't even stand it. ummmm, the kitty's and dog's legs in the beginning?! what. are. you. even. talking. about!?!? don't even get me started on the end with the kitty on the unicorn...or the dance scene?! seriously, i've watched it at least 17x today and laughed out loud each time. cereal. ok, enough with the screaming.
so i recently got a new macbook (thank the good lord harry. my that was a dark time.) and wow, i know it may be sad to type this out loud...but i felt so unplugged. literally. however, at the same time the loss of my previous little g4 (*whimper*) left a lot of time on my hands to really enjoy this summer to the fullest. it was probs one of the most fulfilling summers i have ever had. so i have no complaints. BUT (oh there is always a but, you can rest assured.), had i gotten a new computer a few weeks later perhaps i would have lost out on this little gem of a video by lykke li! but thanks to the adorableness that is one half of for me for you, kate posted this video this week...i have had it on non-stop on my ipod touch and i have been breaking in my new itunes w/ it as well on repeat. i joked w/ a friend today that this song is our generation's version of 9-5. especially since i am working 2 jobs right now, regularly going 8 to 12 days in a row w/out a break, this song is my anthem right now. ahhhh, "i'm working a sweat, but it's all good, i'm breaking my back but it's all good, cause i know i'll get it back, yeah, i know your hands will clap, and i'm working, yeah, i'm working to make butter for my piece of bun..."
54-40 sent over a clip of their video for their single northern soul, animated by sol friedman. although a grim story line albeit apropos for the times my friends, the animation is awesome. and we love awesome animation, don't we?
loving this video from adam5100. he's a been a fav of mine since i interned at juxtapoz.com back in 2006. adam is an incredibly talented stencil artist from the bay area. check out his website and yes, yes, those are stencils. i'm really excited to see what adam get's up to for his new show the heart vs. the mind on the 21st of may at rowan morrison gallery in oakland, ca.
i just saw this over on it's nice that, one of my favorite blogs...and it really should be yours too if it isn't already. anyhoodles, i'm still laughing so hard over here. i'm sorry, but throw the running man into anything and i could laugh for days on end.
ok. let's have a chat about santogold and how AMAZING her debut album is. actually, there's not much to chat about other than it's positively dope. a lot of people are saying she reminds them of MIA, but i'd have to compare her more to esg meets le tigre. the album has been on repeat since i got it on friday. this could say more about a possible o.c.d. infliction then the album itself, but that's not the point. the point is that this is a must have album! but before you say yes or no or whatevs, just watch the video below. the beginning of the video gave me chills. chills i tell you! i wouldn't lie to you, i love you! as of now, i'm a lady is my spring anthem and i think it should be your's too. even if you're a dude. that's even better. seriously folks, this album is dynamic and worth checking out.
when the royal tenenbaums came out on vhs, yes, that's right vhs, i rented it so many times that the peeps at my favorite video store lost weekend in san francisco just gave it to me one night. i still can't tell if it was just that they generally rock or that they ultimately felt very sad for me because by that point i had basically rented the video so many times i had probably bought it 4x over. ahhh. most likely a bit of both. the following combination of 3 iconic pop culture references: kermit the frog, elliot smith and the royal tenebaums makes for something just short of genius.
personally, i'm a big fan of jokes, hmmm, maybe 'jokes' isn't the best description. i'm a big fan of pulling people's legs, yanking their chain as it were. like most thirty something ladies, i'm a big fan of miranda july. i like her quirkiness, style and her art. i've been familiar w/ miranda for yrs but i was completely sold; hook, line and sinker on miranda in that instant in her film me and you and everybody we know, where she totally loses it in the car. fuck old pople, fuck children, fuck peace?! i loved her insanity. i just saw this video over on one of my favorite personal blogs "WE ARE INDEPENDENTLY WEALTHY." i really believe that only miranda july has the genius, social savvy-ness, and cuteness to get away w/ this.
