from the deep, dark, magical forest of her imagination, katy horan’s artwork
follows the tradition of folk art as a means to tell her own
idiosyncratic tales through the indigenous dwellers that reside in this
mythical place. the themes and archetypes of this body of work emerged
from countless influences and imagery from katy’s subconscious to form
her own language of characters, symbols and illustrated rituals.
so i recently got a new macbook (thank the good lord harry. my that was a dark time.) and wow, i know it may be sad to type this out loud...but i felt so unplugged. literally. however, at the same time the loss of my previous little g4 (*whimper*) left a lot of time on my hands to really enjoy this summer to the fullest. it was probs one of the most fulfilling summers i have ever had. so i have no complaints. BUT (oh there is always a but, you can rest assured.), had i gotten a new computer a few weeks later perhaps i would have lost out on this little gem of a video by lykke li! but thanks to the adorableness that is one half of for me for you, kate posted this video this week...i have had it on non-stop on my ipod touch and i have been breaking in my new itunes w/ it as well on repeat. i joked w/ a friend today that this song is our generation's version of 9-5. especially since i am working 2 jobs right now, regularly going 8 to 12 days in a row w/out a break, this song is my anthem right now. ahhhh, "i'm working a sweat, but it's all good, i'm breaking my back but it's all good, cause i know i'll get it back, yeah, i know your hands will clap, and i'm working, yeah, i'm working to make butter for my piece of bun..."
as the summer starts to wind down, i find myself getting wistful for cable knit tights, cute dresses and my many a vintage jacket i have stored away like a squirrel w/ her nuts. but i'm a finicky squirrel and although i long for the whispery winds of the something wicked this way comes late september winds...i'm just not ready to say good bye to one of the best summers i have ever had. looking at rachel sumpter's gouache paintings resonate these feelings even more. her depictions of summer fun activities and cozy winter scenarios make it hard to want to leave one season for another when they look this good. perhaps the only way to suffice, is to just stare a bit longer at these beautifully subtle scenes. just a little bit longer...and try and find a nice middle ground. rachel is part of a group show at the hosleft gallery opening september 6th in san francisco.
the artist other recently had a show open on the 16th of august titled: you've been wasting your time at the carmichael gallery in west hollywood, but to his dismay (and the gallery's) his work for the group show got lost in the mail. it arrived eventually, but way past the opening night. the show is up til september 14th, but other wanted to get the word out about the work. you can see all 34 paintings on his flickr page. the paintings are for sale w/ appropriate contact on the image's page. they're super intricate and awesomely colorful w/ his signature big heads and graphic patterns. check em out. other always inspires me to draw more. for sure.
