I've toyed with the idea over the past few years of doing a podcast series -- but honestly never found the time to nail it down. But push came to shove a few weeks ago when I was given the opportunity to sit down with graffiti writer and artist Steve Powers. He had come into SF to set up for Sign Your Life Away at Guerrero Gallery and was only going to be in town for a little over two days. So I figured, no time like the present to begin a series I had only given minimal thought to.
I joined Steve and his sister, Maria, for pizza at a noisy bar in the Mission as he took a break from preparing for the show. Although the recording is a little rough and noisy in the backgroud I think you'll find that the converstaion was worth polishing (with my crash course podcast skills) and posting regardless of the noisy bar patrons. We cover a wide range of topics from his youth in Philadelphia to his feelings around graffiti as a crime to having community as an artist. It's a broad convo, but one that I was delighted to be a part of. It was really inspiring to sit down with Steve and hear so much about his history and thoughts around art -- I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
