I'm starting a new job today! I'll share more on that later...but until then I figured I'd share some of my latest Instagram images with an inspiring word for a Monday. Can you see the Pepperidge Farms hiding somewhere in there? A friend totally busted me on Instagram in the comments. God, I love that app. Are you on there? Say hello if you are!
I stopped reading fashion magazines a few years ago, after I was finally able to leave high end retail. I realized I was still buying them but never really looking through them. I stopped purchasing them due to a combination of things, but I mainly stopped because the magazines ultimately left me feeling less than and overwhelmed with what I didn't look like (or didn't have).
I'm approaching fourty in July and the only advice I can give to younger readers of this blog is to not believe the hype. It is true, that the older you get the more confident you become and the less things really bother you -- at least that has been my experience. Don't believe the hype.
I am forever grateful for the growth that time has given me. However, like most women, I still struggle with not being what the media thinks I should look like. It's hard to not worry about the young women around me. Seeing women like Adele being championed, is exhilarating and affirming. She's talented and so strong. It's fabulous to see her gracing the cover of Vogue and getting all of the attention she deserves.
Every time I see, read or hear an interview with Adele -- I feel so empowered by her. This 'behind the scenes' video of her during the Vogue cover shoot is just another example of that empowering vibe she emanates in every way. I love how earnest and humble she is, yet so very strong and fierce at the same time.
Adele doesn't disappoint in this video...however I can't say that about the actual cover of Vogue — it's discouraging to see that they airbrushed the bejeezus out of her (just by watching the video you can tell). But baby steps, ladies, baby steps. *sigh*
As I have mentioned a few times over that past few months, I am shifting the direction of the blog — slightly. I'll still be staying within the idea of inspiration, of course. But I plan on pushing it a bit and incorporating designers and other people and things I find inspiring.
There are so many folks I admire who make things and who make their living making things. And it blows my mind. Plus there are tons of creative folks with the best shops selling these wares. Most of you don't know this, but my background (of almost 20 years) is in high-end retail. Yep, I was a huge retail snob (but I'm always a sucker for a $15 H&M dress). So I'll be bringing in a bit more of my 2nd love: accessories and clothes.
This is where my male readers groan! Stay with me boys, I know you'll be inspired too! I promise.
So along with posting here and there about lovely handmade things, I'll also branch out my 'studio visits' to designers and shops. I have one visit this weekend that I'll be posting for next week that I'm really excited for!
I thought what better way to start this new era than with the scarves I spotted on Fieldguided that you see above.
I hope you have a great weekend. Until Monday, I'll leave you with this Instagram pic of Percy.
Well, it only took months! But between a full time job, holidaze and just generally trying to have a life I some how got the new look done! There is still some tweaking here and there and some things I'll need to add -- but ahhh, I couldn't wait anymore.
I hired Kate Miss of For Me, For You to do the branding -- which basically created the base for the new look. I think she did a great job! Kate has been through a lot recently and she was nothing but gracious and kind with my 37 or so emails.
I hope you like what you see. I'm pretty happy with the new look, I tried to quiet it down a bit. I'm planning on heading into a more personal vibe with lots of inspiration and art sprinkled all over and I think the new look represents that.
Please let me know if any links or things are borked or you are having any other issues. Or if you just love it! The blog will be 5 in June and it's crazy to think it's been that long! Thanks for joining me here. <3 meighan
I am going to see Miranda July tonight at City Arts & Lectures here in SF. I am pretty excited. I waffle back on forth on her — but ultimatley really love everything that she does. I think she's got a brilliant mind. I read a New York Times article this summer, where the writer brings up that some people find her terribly annoying because of who she is and that she is often judged in a sexist light. Her response is awesome and so Miranda July (she is referring to being compared to Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson):
“All those men are also personal. I don’t mind that, but I do mind that it’s not really questioned, whereas I or another woman is looked at as so self-obsessed. Men are just not being judged in the same way. They’re never going to be annoying in the same way.”
It's either going to be really good or really annoying in a super great way.
