Phil McGaughy's wood sculptures kind of blow my mind. The intricacy is pretty impressive to say the least. Here Phil talks about the process behind his work and the inspiration that fuels it:
"My use of organic wood combined with hobby shop wood construction is intended to call attention to two seemingly opposed forces – human nature, and natures limitations. The abstract milled wood exoskeletons should be considered as both viral predators consuming, and prosthetic appendages reinventing, the found organic forms. My intent is to have the two forms tangoing around each other in a kind of symbiotic tension.
The first couple of pieces were made in 2006, one yr. after my sculptor boss/mentor Louis Pearson passed away. He spent his final 5 yrs. or so feverishly blazing trails (literally, like with a shovel and an pickaxe) through the Montara mountain wilderness (near devils slide) He considered the trails he sculpted into the mountain some of his best artworks, I agreed with him! He loved Manzanita wood, and for the first year of my working on these I used only Manzanita wood. I still use it. In a funny way, I still consider these pieces to sort of be like a wink and a nod to Lou."
